A diamond’s shape is the first thing people notice and the most personal choice you’ll make.
Shape is not the same as cut — cut is about quality of finish; shape is the outline of the stone.
Here’s how the most popular shapes behave, so you can choose the one that feels like you.
Round Brilliant
The most popular shape, and for good reason. Its 57–58 facets are engineered to maximise sparkle, making it the most brilliant shape of all. Timeless, versatile, and flattering on every hand. If you want maximum fire and can’t decide, round is the safe and beautiful default.
Oval
A round’s brilliance in an elongated outline. Ovals sparkle nearly as much as rounds, but the longer shape flatters the finger and can look larger than a round of the same weight. A favourite for those who want presence and elegance together.
Emerald
A rectangular shape with stepped facets that create long flashes of light rather than sparkle — a “hall of mirrors” effect. Understated, architectural, and quietly sophisticated. Because its open table hides less, emerald cuts reward good clarity.
Princess
A square shape with sharp corners and brilliant faceting — modern, geometric, and full of sparkle. A strong choice for someone who wants the fire of a round with a contemporary, angular edge.
Cushion
A square or rectangular shape with softly rounded corners, like a pillow. It combines vintage romance with excellent brilliance and a soft, warm character. Flattering and full of personality.
Pear
A teardrop — round at one end, tapering to a point. Distinctive and graceful, it elongates the finger and offers a unique silhouette for someone who wants something a little different.
Marquise
A long shape with pointed ends that maximises apparent size and creates a striking, regal look. It makes the most of every carat and draws the eye.
How to choose
There is no “best” shape — only the one that suits you. If you want maximum sparkle, look at round or oval. If you prefer clean, modern lines, consider emerald or princess. If you want character and warmth, cushion or pear. And remember: the setting and your own style matter as much as the shape itself.
