The Diamond Buyer's Brief

This is the guide we wish every diamond buyer had before they walked into a store.

No sales pressure, no jargon designed to confuse you — just the honest essentials for buying a lab-grown diamond well. If you read only one of our guides, read this one.

1. Decide What the Piece is For

An everyday ring, a milestone gift, a self-purchase to mark something — the occasion shapes every other decision. A piece worn daily favours durability and comfort; a statement piece can prioritise presence. Start here, not with the stone.

2. Set a Real Budget — Then Prioritise Cut

Decide what you’re comfortable spending before you fall in love with a stone. Then remember the single most useful rule in this entire guide: cut matters most. A beautifully cut diamond outshines a larger, duller one every time. Spend on cut; treat carat as the flexible lever.

3. Be Sensible on Colour and Clarity

This is where buyers most often overpay. In the near-colourless range, grades look identical to the naked eye — especially once set in gold. And a VS-clarity stone is comfortably “eye-clean,” meaning no inclusions are visible without magnification. Paying for a flawless grade or a top colour you cannot see is paying for a certificate, not a better-looking diamond. (We select for F–H colour and typically VS clarity for exactly this reason — see the 4Cs guide.)

4. Insist on Independent Certification

Never buy an uncertified diamond. A grade from the seller alone is just a claim. Every diamond worth buying comes with an independent report — ours are all IGI-certified — that you can verify yourself. This is your single best protection as a buyer.

5. Understand What You’re Paying For

An honest jeweller charges for the diamond, the gold, and the craftsmanship — not for manufactured scarcity. Lab-grown lets you skip the inflated markups of the mined trade. Be wary of any seller whose pricing depends on “limited time” urgency or constant discounting; a fair price doesn’t need a countdown.

6. Think in Terms of Wearing, Not Investing

We’ll repeat this because it’s important and rarely said: fine jewellery is not an investment vehicle. Buy a piece because you’ll wear it and love it, not because you expect it to appreciate. That mindset leads to purchases you’re happy with for years.

7. Buy From Someone You Can Actually Talk to

A good jeweller answers your questions plainly and stands behind the piece after the sale — sizing, maintenance, exchange. The relationship shouldn’t end at checkout. If you can’t reach a real person before you buy, that tells you something about after.

The Short Version

  • Prioritise cut above all.
  • Don’t overpay for colour and clarity you can’t see.
  • Only buy IGI-certified, and verify it.
  • Choose honest pricing over discounts and urgency.
  • Buy to wear and love, not to invest.
  • Buy from people who’ll still be there afterwards.

That’s the whole brief. If you’d like to talk through a specific piece or question, message us on WhatsApp — you’ll reach one of us directly.
